Benjamin Moore Blue Nova: a complete color review

Looking for the perfect light blue paint color for your home? Let’s talk about Benjamin Moore Blue Nova and if it might be right for your home!

Blue is one of those colors that most everyone likes. Even though blues can be plenty saturated and colorful, they can also almost work as a neutral in many situations.

Even though so many people love the color blue, sometimes it can be scary to think of using blue paint.

Will it be too bold? Will it overwhelm my space?

I personally love a blue wall color and, if it’s done right, think it can be truly fabulous.

Benjamin Moore recently announced its color of the year to be Blue Nova – so I wanted to dive in and explore what makes this trending color so great!

Blue Nova is a mid-toned shade of blue with purple undertones. As a medium blue paint color, it has a really classical and timeless feel that works well with many different home aesthetics.

Color Family

Blue Nova is in the blue family.

Light Reflectance Value

16.98

Light Reflective Value is the measurement of how much light a color bounces around. This is on a scale of 0 to 100 with 0 being pure black and 100 being pure white.

With an LRV of 16.98, Blue Nova is a dark blue paint color. Generally, we consider any shade of blue with an LRV of 6-10 to be navy blue, so this is lighter than navy but definitely not a light blue!

Undertones

Blue Nova is a shade of blue with cool violet undertones.

This shade is definitely blue and not purple – look at lighter shades on the color strip, they are baby blue. But, it will feel more purple, especially in warmly lit southern facing rooms.

It’s very important to swatch colors on your wall to make sure they look good – day and night – in your actual space before committing.

Best uses

Blue Nova is a bold color that you might not want on every wall of your whole house. I love it for:

  • Accent walls
  • Bedrooms – especially smaller secondary bedrooms
  • Kitchen cabinets – like an island you want as a focal point
  • Bathroom cabinetry
  • Front doors
  • Furniture

Coordinating Colors

Blue Nova pairs well with lighter shades of blue for a monochromatic color palette.

For more contrast, consider decorating with shades of tan. Blue and tan pair nicely for a coastal color palette!

If you want a bold pop of color consider picking a light pink paint color or terra cotta paint color for your accents!

Light Blues

  • Misty Blue
  • Blue Ice
  • Riviera Azure
  • Steel Blue

Tans

  • Monterey White
  • Quincy Tan
  • Elephant Tusk
  • Seashell

Pinks/Terra Cotta

  • Teacup Rose
  • Topaz
  • Pristine

Trim Colors

Since Blue Nova is a cooler toned paint color, I prefer to pair it with a bright white trim.
