Gossamer Veil vs Modern Gray

Looking for the perfect warm greige paint color? Let’s compare two popular options – Sherwin Williams Gossamer Veil vs Modern Gray – to see if one might be perfect for your home.

Warm paint colors are definitely the trend of the moment. Within that warm color family, neutrals are usually the most popular and easiest to decorate with.

A warm tan or gray color is always going to be a popular pick. While some of these shades are super light, trends are currently leaning towards shades that are a bit more mid toned that have some color depth to them.

Two of the most popular colors in this category are Gossamer Veil and Modern Gray.

Gossamer Veil vs Modern Gray

Gossamer Veil and Modern Gray are both warm, mid-toned greige paint colors by Sherwin Williams. They have the same color depth, but have very different undertones. Placing swatches or samples of these colors next to each other will immediately bring out the difference in tone!

What is similar about Gossamer Veil vs Modern Gray?

Gossamer Veil and Modern Gray are both warm greige paint colors. They also both have an LRV of 62 exactly – meaning they have the same color depth or darkness.

For that reason, they are both great neutral paint colors to use in a space where you want the color to show through, even if it is very bright and well lit. They hold their tone and don’t get too washed out.

Both of these facts make the colors seem very similar, but once you get them next to each other you can see the true difference in tone!

UndertonesGossamer Veil has slight green – and sometimes purple – undertones. However, they are fairly light. This is considered a great neutral warm greige.Modern gray has warm undertones. There is taupe or pink to it in certain lighting – especially in warm, bright spaces. It can sometimes also read as green or even a little purple.

Undertones

Undertone is the main difference between these colors. When placed next to each other, you can see that Gossamer Veil has a good amount of green to it. On the other hand, Modern Gray is much more taupe and has a good amount of pink to it.

How do I decide between these two colors?

Modern Gray is going to feel heavier and warmer than Gossamer Veil in almost every room. If you want something with a bit of depth and warmth, Modern Gray might be the right choice.

However, remember that Modern Gray can often read a touch pink on the walls. A lot of people do NOT want anything that reads as pink, especially such a pastel pink.

So, if you have a lot of warm light – like from a southern-facing window, Gossamer Veil might actually be better. The warm light will tone down the green undertones and make it feel more neutral.
